In a recent report, Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup said, "The single best activity for any team leader to deliver is not employee satisfaction, but rather employee development."
The same report also found that for employees to be engaged at work, four needs must be met:
Basic needs: "I have everything I need to do my job."
Individual needs: "I feel cared about by my peers and I have the opportunity to do good work."
Teamwork needs: "People value my opinions and I feel connected to our company mission."
Growth needs: "Someone has talked to me about my progress, I feel like I have a path in this company and I have opportunities to learn and grow."
