I believe the only thing that stacks better than pancakes is marketing technology…because pancakes usually come in one flavor, but a martech stack is layer upon layer of uniqueness.
I've learned some things along the journey from agency account executive to corporate product development director. Here are a few of them.
1. I did it all for the cookie! As a marketing manager, I needed to connect digital advertising performance and website actions to offline conversion points in a proprietary CRM. It required a complete overhaul of backend and frontend website technology with the end goal of capturing attribution data like source, medium, campaign, GCLID and form location. And that’s how my transition to product owner began.
2. Statistics was my least favorite class, but I can’t imagine a world without Heap Analytics, Google Analytics 4, and Google Tag Manager. Every day, I look at charts and graphs to improve user experience on our websites. Each KPI, benchmark, and pilot program is an opportunity to improve the metric. Naturally, this compliments my goal-oriented nature.
3. I’m low-key proud of having one foot firmly in analog and one in digital. It’s so satisfying to take hand-written notes in a well-crafted journal and turning off notifications after 7pm. But instant access to marketing data and sharing photos with friends across the globe is equally rewarding. Not to mention the ability to Google anything if you’re a self-teaching, self-starter.
4. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools is my favorite Scrum value. People-leading can be difficult, but by embracing a steward leadership style, I’ve learned to trust and empower team members to be their best possible selves.
