Kevin McHugh | Consulting is the Missing Ingredient in Your Business

Podcast Episode

I became a CEO at the age of 33 because I got results. Early mentors helped me smooth out my rough edges by encouraging me to join YPO (the Young Presidents Organization). My drive to increase the top and bottom lines also drove me to understand how to lead, engage, and motivate people. I became a leadership junkie and remain one today. Like the leaders I coach, being in control of my destiny was essential. Without the capital to own controlling interest in a startup or existing business, I turned to consulting and coaching.

In 1990 I started JKM Management Development, a CEO/Executive Coaching and Team Building firm, to increase organizational performance through coaching, training and support. I honed my leadership and facilitation skills as a YPO Forum Moderator and turned those to use for YPO globally as a Certified Forum Facilitator. For more than 30 years, I’ve assisted more than 3,000 CEO’s and hundreds of other senior executives build extreme self-awareness, develop their leadership styles, hone their relationship skills and learn to expand it to teams throughout their organizations.

I am trained in board governance by the National Association of Corporate Directors. I served on the board of directors for Jack Cooper Transport where I chaired the Comp Committee and served on the Audit Committee. I have been a guest lecturer at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. I have extensive training and experience in behavioral assessment and several psychotherapy models.

As a volunteer, I serve as Chair of Trustees for True Freedom Enterprises. Our mission is to revolutionize prisoner reentry to society to reduce recidivism. TFE provides job skills training and placement to prisoners during their final year of incarceration. We integrate them with employers before their release date and have a job waiting for them. Our vision includes creation of transitional housing with an emphasis on dignity and character development programs.

When I’m not helping business leaders in the C-suite, I’m riding my Harley-Davidson motorcycle, traveling with my wife, Mary, and spending time with our six kids and 13 grandchildren.
