During my 30+ year publishing career. I’ve worked as a reporter, an editor, a (bad) ad salesman, a publication manager and a group content director. These days I’m an analyst, writer, speaker, consultant and trainer helping publishing professionals make better decisions about the future of their publications.
I’ve written about media for The New Statesman, The Drum, InPublishing, MediaTel Newsline and Publishing Executive in the United States. Formerly editor-at-Large for TheMediaBriefing.com, I wrote the ‘State of the Media 2017’ and ‘Successful European Paid Content Strategies’ reports. In June 2018, I researched and wrote the 'InPublishing Guide to Paid Content'. I now co-host the weekly Media Voices Podcast.
I have been lucky enough to speak about the media business in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe and as a regular judge on magazine and media awards programs, I am exposed to the best the media business has to offer. I co-founded the Publisher Podcast Awards in 2019.
In 2014, I published The Magazine Diaries: ‘100 Words’, a collection of 100 word essays by 100 magazine people in support of child literacy charity MagAid. I have resurrected the project this year in support of the Big Issue's efforts to secure emergency subscriptions during the COVID-19 lockdown.
